What caught my attention in week thirteen, 2023
- 📚 After I was busy with Readwise Reader and ChatGPT tools in week twelve, this week PKM was high on my agenda.
- I've been using Obsidian for a while, had a quick look at Notion, occasionally use Craft for certain things and now, I don't know why only now, stumbled across Logseq. It has a bit of a learning curve, but I really like it 🥰.
- Therefore, I was wondering if I should use Obsidian or Notion? 🤯
- And after a couple of days evaluating Logseq, I see myself using both going forward. I can imagine keeping a daily journal in Logseq, especially at work. A technique I have never used before. And for special projects and longer notes I use Obsidian. We'll see how that works out.
- Coincidentally, there was a discussion about note taking this week in Clockwise as well.
- 🤖 But again this week there were a number of new ChatGPT apps. They are the new Mastodon clients of the Twitter clients, the calendar, and the weather apps.
- WriteMage - The Only AI App you need was released.
- The idea to use ChatGPT in any app is appealing but it's pricing makes no sense. Even without discounts, the live-time license is cheaper than an annual subscription. Anyway, MacGPT 3 came and it does the same and is much cheaper. 🥰
- On Apple Watch I've installed Ask AI "Use ChatGPT right on your watch" from Sindre Sorhus but on The Talk Show Petey - ChatGPT for Apple Watch was mentioned.
-
Ptujec released LaunchBar/Ask-ChatGPT on GitHub. Now I don't have to be sad about not using Raycast anymore. 😎
- Short Circuit: An AI Assistant is a client for iOS and iPadOS.
- And if that wasn't enough, the German brewery Becks made a big marketing push and announced a new beer, developed by an AI 🍺. The IT news service heise.de published a very funny review (in German), written by Bing chat. 🤣
-
Gruber introduced Wavelength Messenger for iOS and macOS with a very long post on daring fireball. I asked ChatGPT to summarize it:
Wavelength is a group messaging app focused on privacy and intuitive threading, which integrates GPT-3.5 AI chat into group discussions. It is designed to work better than other messaging apps for larger groups and allows users to create their own private micro social networks. AI chat is a recent addition to the app, allowing users to have a different experience when interacting with AI in a group setting.
-
I was still curious and tried the whole thing together with vonStein. The app is quite pretty and well thought out. Gruber has written about all the great things it can do. What you can't do (yet): Name a thread, change your own name or profile picture. But most importantly, specify that not every person in a group chat can simply share an invite to random people who then can view the entire chat history afterwards. How dangerous is that?
It's been a fun day trying everything out. I haven't used it since then. I wouldn't know what for. I'm pretty sure I won't find a larger group of people all on iOS devices. Threads or not, the app doesn't make sense to me right now.

- 🗺 I did not know that omg.lol had a map.
- 📱 I bought Papers, please for iOS.
- 📱 A new version of Tally Tally • Quick Counter by Agile Tortoise was released. If you have to count something, this app might be the right one for the job. Now, with a watchOS app as well.
- Fitness Stats for iOS was updated to 2.0. You can upgrade for a small amount via an IAP. I like its simplicity.
- 🌱 Spring is just around the corner. I have therefore installed Flora Incognita for iOS. It identifies flowers and trees. I will also look into PlantNet: "PI@ntNet is an application that allows you to identify plants simply by photographing them with your smartphone."
- 🌤 Luftqualität for iOS might be interesting for people living in Germany.
- 📱 Sequel Media Tracker for iOS came out. It plays in the same ballpark as Sofa does. It was praised by MacStories but I will stay with just tracking TV shows and movies with trakt.tv and third party clients. I want to be able to access an API, subscribe to RSS or iCal feeds and do things with my data e.g. using ifttt.
- 🖼 Nice collection of iPhone wallpapers, called Weirdo Walls.
- 🧮 There was an update to Soulver with new features, like support for Live Weather and surprisingly Soulver 3 is out now for iPad as well!
- 🐟 I've joined the Crouton: Cooking Companion testflight. But I already know that I will stick with Mela.
- 🖥️ I've stumbled upon this awesome rust CLI tools. Especially dust: A more intuitive version of du in rust is really cool.
- 📆 Dato together with Apple's Calender.app replaced Fantastical. Before, I was trying to replace it with BusyCal but that's not for me. (BTW Dato and BusyCal both are on SetApp.)
- 🐘 Draftodon by FloGroh for posting to Mastodon via Drafts was updated to v1.2.
- 🖥 I just forgot how helpful Jettison was. It "eliminates the hassle of manually ejecting external disks before you put your MacBook to Sleep".
- 🔢 Cabel Sasser wrote a piece about Apple's iOS and macOS need a password manager. It was picked up by the usual suspects, sixcolors, MacStories, Daring Fireball, and another time. Till then, maybe just put “Passwords” icon on your Home Screen or in your Dock, using a shortcut. (BTW thanks @habibcham)
- 🎮 My playdate replacement finally arrived. Setting it up and restoring the backup again did not go quite as smoothly. But I don't want to complain. Hopefully my problems are fixed now.
- 🤦♂️ If I hadn't switched from feedly to Reeder a long time ago, I would have done it now (cf. also this thread).
- 🚴 Bicycle: Incredibly, interactive website, that illustrates the forces at play riding your bike.
- 📺 One episode of Star Wars: The Bad Batch and two of The Mandalorian, for me so far the weakest of the three seasons.
- 🎙 Mac Power Users: 685: Fighting Digital Distractions had an interesting topic. I then turned off even more notifications or moved them to the overview and also reworked my focus modes once again.
- 🎙 Listened to some podcasts: Playdate Podcast: Battleship Godios, Playdate Podcast: Forrest Byrnes — Up In Smoke, and Upgrade: 452: Schrödinger’s Killer App.
